The Best Festive Santa Train Rides Around The UK 2025
If you’re looking for Christmas days out for kids that are a little different to the usual Santa’s Grotto, why not try one of these Santa Train Rides?!
These Christmas train services offer a unique experience to meet Santa on a train and are a must if you have a railway enthusiast in the family.
These Christmas steam train journeys are located all over the UK so there’s bound to be something near you.

Isle of Wight Steam Railway
Polar Express Train Rides
Perhaps the most well known of the Christmas steam train experiences is the Polar Express Christmas train ride.
Based on the book (and the popular kids’ Christmas movie) – The Polar Express – these Santa steam train journeys offer magical Christmas family days out. There are a number of Polar Express train ride UK locations.

There are also 34 Polar Express train rides in the US in case you happen to be visiting the US over Christmas.
If you haven’t seen the movie or read the book of the Polar Express, you might want to watch it or read it with the kids before your journey.
Some of the train rides have a story reading during the journey and it can be nice to bring your own copy to read along with them.

Churnet Valley Railway (NEW)
A journey on the Polar Express Train Ride at Churnet Valley Railway starts with hot chocolate and a cookie being served by the singing chefs after you board.
The Hobo will be on board to show you the true meaning of Christmas during your journey to the North Pole. At the North Pole, Santa will be waiting to greet believers and hand out a silver bell from his sleigh.
The journey on the Polar Express lasts around 1 hour but allowed around 1.5 hours for the whole experience.

Wensleydale Railway
The Polar Express train picks you up at Leeming Bar station and transports you to the ‘North Pole’. During the journey you meet characters from the Polar Express movie.
When you arrive in the ‘North Pole’, you meet Santa who gifts a silver sleigh bell (just like the Polar Express bell in the movie) to all kids on the nice list!
Dates: Beginning of November to 23rd December.

South Devon Railway
The South Devon Polar Express is a large, black steam train that puffs out clouds of steam as it pulls into the station, much to the excitement of children waiting on the platform.
During the one hour journey, you’ll meet the conductor (who will clip your ticket) and his crew. Remember to be on best behaviour as the elves will be scanning little ones to see if they’re on the nice list this year.

Seaton Tramway
OK, this is not Christmas Santa train as it is a tram but the experience is similar so we thought we would include it anyway in case you can’t get a ticket for the South Devon Railway Santa train.
The journey lasts around 2 – 2 1/2 hours during which there will be hot chocolate, Christmas carols and a light show once you reach the ‘North Pole’. Each passenger will receive a silver sleigh bell as a gift from Father Christmas.
Dates: End of November – 24th December.
Ticket Price: From £27.00 – £40.00 per person (under 2 free). You can book tickets here.

Bure Valley Railway
The 1 hour experience includes a steam train ride which departs from Aylsham station and a visit to see Santa in his grotto.
Each child will receive a gift from Santa.

Buckinghamshire Railway Centre
Enjoy a visit from Father Christmas in your compartment on board The Panto Express steam train at Buckinghamshire Railway Centre.
You will be shown to your compartment on the steam train, and you will be taken up and down our 1/3 mile length of track whilst you wait for Father Christmas, who makes his way along the train visiting all the children.
When he comes to you, one of his elves will pull gifts for the children from his huge toy sack.
Afterwards, enjoy a mini family pantomime of Beauty and the Beast, brought to you by a professional touring theatre company!
