Before you take a look at our recommendations for the best family accommodation in Cape Town, here are the best areas in Cape Town for families..
What’s the best area to stay in Cape Town for families?
There is a huge range of accommodation in Cape Town for families which is what makes choosing the right one quite tricky.
It really helps to know which areas of Cape Town are good for families. In our eyes, there are four main Cape Town areas that are good for kids.
We have stayed in all of them over the years. Each one offers something different so it is good to get an idea of what you want to see and do in Cape Town before you book anything.
If you need help planning your trip, we highly recommend Go2Africa. They can help plan the most fabulous family holidays in South Africa.
We have been planning and booking our own trips to South Africa for years but recently we have been using Go2Africa to help organise some trips, especially our safaris.
They are the leading luxury safari experts in South Africa.
These are our favourite areas in Cape Town.
V&A Waterfront
The V&A Waterfront is one of the most popular places to stay in Cape Town with kids. The majority of the accommodation at the Waterfront in Cape Town consists of high end marina apartments with a few high end hotels.
You will feel like you are right in the centre of the action staying here with one of the best shopping malls on your doorstep and a huge selection of restaurants.
The area is buzzing with tourists day and night. There are stunning views of Table Mountain from the Waterfront. If you choose to stay here, you’ll be ideally placed to take a boat trip to Robben Island or a harbour tour. We did this great value 30 minute seal watching trip.
Also in the V&A Waterfront is the Silo District, Cape Town’s newest hub – packed full of restaurants and shops and, of course, the swanky Silo Hotel. If you don’t end up staying there, you need to at least go to their rooftop bar for a drink.
We have stayed in a secure waterfront apartment and been able to go paddleboarding and kayaking in the canal straight from the jetty outside the apartment.
See the self-catering accommodation for families in Cape Town at the end of the post to find out more about this apartment.
Atlantic Seaboard
The Atlantic Seaboard stretches from Green Point all the way to Hout Bay with lots of fabulous beaches along the way.
Areas such as Bakoven, Clifton and Camps Bay are great places to stay in Cape Town for families because you are on the beach but also close to the city centre.
Camps Bay is our favourite beach for families. It is one of the best beaches in Cape Town with a large number of restaurants on the seafront.
We love it because it is vibrant and has that absolutely stunning and iconic view of the Twelve Apostles. It also has a huge expanse of sand so you will find plenty of space, unlike at Clifton which can get very packed.
The waves can get quite big there but luckily there is a tidal pool at the far end of the beach which is great for younger children.
There are some beautiful family apartments in Camps Bay with ocean views on PlumGuide.
The City Bowl
It’s hard to pin point the centre of Cape Town because Cape Town is made up of several very distinct areas.
But the City Bowl is the oldest urban area in Cape Town and the most historic part of the Mother City.
It is where you will find the Central Business District, The South African Parliament, The Iziko South African Museum and many more museums.
It is also where you will find the historic and beautifully colourful Bo-Kaap.
One of the newer up and coming areas in on the edge of the City Bowl area in Cape Town is Woodstock.
It is a mix of big Victorian houses and industrial living with a bit of an edgy vibe. We haven’t stayed here yet but have visited the area, mainly for the Old Biscuit Mill where you will find a great mix of arts & crafts and culinary delights.
Constantia
If you want to be out of the hustle and bustle of the city but still within easy reach of the centre, we recommend Constantia.
Constantia is one of the oldest areas of Cape Town and is just beautiful with vineyards as far as the eye can see and wonderful dining options.
We can personally recommend Bistro Sixteen 82 at the Steenberg Wine Farm.
Next door to Constantia is Newlands which is also great for families. It is a leafy green residential area and where you will find the lovely Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens.
Make sure to take a look at The Vineyard if you are looking in this area.

Mount Nelson – A Belmond Hotel
If there is a Grand Dame in Cape Town, it has to be the Mount Nelson.
Built in 1899, ‘The Pink Lady’ as it is affectionately known, is a stunning hotel and spa in the Gardens area of the City Bowl and one of Cape Town’s top five star hotels.

The Victoria & Alfred
I’m not going to put too much about The Victoria & Alfred Hotel here because it is not one of our top picks for accommodation in Cape Town for families.
It’s a shame because it is one of the most central hotels in the V&A Waterfront location with everything on its doorstep.
That’s not to say you can’t stay here. They can create a family room for you with interconnecting rooms, but you would need to contact the hotel to organise this (or ask Go2Africa).
They do have a sister hotel, however, that is very family friendly. See our section on The Winchester below on boutique hotels in Cape Town.

Budget accommodation in Cape Town for families
It can sometimes be a bit harder to find affordable family accommodation in Cape Town but we there are a couple of great places.
We’ve stayed in lots of backpacker accommodation over the years. Some of the places we have stayed have been little more than a shed.
It’s very different these days and we have recently started using hostels again for stays with the kids.
Many hostels these days are more like hotels and make a great choice for cheap family accommodation in Cape Town.
If you love the hostel vibe and price but want your own family room with bathroom, these are our recommendations for budget-friendly accommodation in Cape Town.
The B.I.G
The rooms are fairly basic but stylish and the family room has an ensuite bathroom. There’s a pool onsite and breakfast is included.
Green Point is a great location. It’s a short walk to the Waterfront and to Green Point park where there are playgrounds for kids.

It is very centrally located and ideal if you want to visit the South African Museum.
There are two-bedroom suites available for families, sleeping 4.
There is a fantastic rooftop with bar and pool and stunning views of the city.
The kids will love the very eccentric decor! This is one of the best boutique family hotels in Cape Town.

Self-catering accommodation in Cape Town for families
When you’re travelling with kids, it’s not a bad idea to consider self-catering apartments in Cape Town for families.
We like to at least have breakfast items in. You get more space in a self-catering apartment than a hotel room in general.
There is lots of self-catering family accommodation in Cape Town. Our tip would be to go for family apartments in Cape Town in a secure complex.
Great areas for finding self-catering apartments are Camps Bay and the V&A Waterfront.
There are some beautiful apartments on PlumGuide. They only pick the very best accommodation.
We have never had any issues when visiting South Africa with kids but for peace of mind, we would recommend doing this.
We recommend looking at aprtments in the V&A Marina Residential (and neighbouring properties).
This two-bedroom apartment we rented was huge. We had a kitchen and two bathrooms and a huge balcony. We had access to three pools.
This was the view from the balcony of our self-catering family accommodation in Cape Town.
And this was one of the pools. We loved chilling out here watching the paddleboarders go by.
We hope you have enjoyed our recommendations for the best accommodation in Cape Town for families.
We go back to Cape Town every year so will be adding more family accommodation in Cape Town each time. Keep checking back in for updates!
