Flashpacking Family on Instagram

We came pretty late to the Instagram party… February 2019 to be precise! But we’ve been working hard since then on curating our best travel (with kids!) photography from recent years, along with some info about each destination, and sharing it all on Instagram.

Follow Flashpacking Family on Instagram to see more!

When Ernie turned 13 in January, we applied for a When Ernie turned 13 in January, we applied for a work permit for him so that he could work for the family business and get paid for it 💷💷

He is now officially on the payroll!

He loves taking photos and is better than me at creative writing (and listening to facts 🤪) so it was a no brainer.

We run 6 websites which are mostly travel related but 2 of them are educational / literature based with content linked to his English curriculum and so he is learning as he works in more ways than one.

Let's hope his new bosses aren't too hard on him 🤣
Kind of joking really as you can't do a proper saf Kind of joking really as you can't do a proper safari at 120km/h BUT the Madaraka Express is a great option for getting from Nairobi to Mombasa in Kenya.

WHY?

It passes through not 1, not 2 but 3 National Parks (Nairobi National Park, Tsavo West and Tsavo East)

If you keep your eyes peeled, you'll spot zebra, giraffe, elephant and more 🐘🦓🦒 !

With single fares from $12 for a 5.5 hour journey, it is an absolute bargain compared to air or road travel!

Next post will have more info on the service along with tips on which class to book.
You know about all the usual travel requirements b You know about all the usual travel requirements but what else do you need to do when going on safari? 🦁🦓🐘🦒🦏

A few extra things we do are...

- spray our clothes with a permethrin spray. This gives added protection against bites. You may be taking anti-malarials but they are not 100% effective so we do all we can to prevent bites. We also have deet sprays and mosquito patches.

- take some smaller denomination USD with us for tips. You might have paid in full for your safari holiday but tips are not included. We aim for around $20/30 per game drive (usually 2 game drives a day) and $15 per night for lodge staff and individual tips for bar staff or waiting staff.

- check your visa requirements. If you've booked a package, your agent will advise you on this but we always book everything ourselves and we nearly missed that the Kenya visa application changed in January 2024 😳😳😳😳😳 No more visa on arrival. You must apply for your ETA in advance.

We have loads more safari tips on our blog if you have never been before and need some advice or ask me anything 😁 🦁🦓🐘🦒🦏

Our boy is 13!!! 🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳 13 years ago our world Our boy is 13!!! 🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳

13 years ago our world collapsed when we nearly died in a home renovation that went disastrously wrong. It was a dark time.

But a few weeks later our gorgeous boy was born and the world became a better place again 👣💙💙

We could not be more proud of everything he has achieved in life to date - from protecting and being a best friend to his little brother to his incredible academic and sporting achievements.

All I could wish for now is for life to slow down a little as he's growing too fast!

Happy 13th Birthday Ernie xxx 🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳
It's hard to admit but our kids spend way too much It's hard to admit but our kids spend way too much time on screens at home (although Ernie showed me a screenshot of a friend's screen usage that day.. 14 hours!!!!! 😳😳😳😳🤯🤯🤯). It's nowhere near as bad as that but could definitely be better.

We have much less screen time when we travel and we know it means less melt downs, more engaged conversations and just less stress overall.

I wish I knew how to get the balance right at home. That's a work in progress! Any comments/suggestions welcome.

I haven't posted much on our Central Moroccan road trip but it was AWESOME! And under £1000 for 4 of us for the week including flights and car hire in the May half term. Itinerary is in the link in Bio.
